FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions
How can SEO help my site?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) helps potential customers discover your website and your products by improving your ranking in the search results of popular web search portals.

What can a website do for me?

Many businesses don't understand what a professional website will do for them, and consider it an unnecessary expense. With 75% of Americans online (204.3 million), failing to establish an internet presence could be a very costly mistake. A website offers many more possibilities than any other form of advertising.

Imagine advertising in a magazine in which you control all of the content. You not only get your name out there, but you have all the space in the world to tell them about your company, why your company is better, and why they should choose you. Your website may be all of the information a waffling customer needs to make their decision.

Who owns my website content?

The client retains ownership of all finished website content and graphics, as well as the licenses to any scripts, such as shopping carts and content management systems - granted that these items are not redistributed.

How will updates to my website be performed once the website is completed?

We offer three options for maintenance, which will be discussed in the preliminary site planning stages:

1) We maintain. We make all updates to the site for you and you pay an hourly rate for our services (as outlined above). A credit card is required to pay for all hourly updates, and you will be invoiced after they have been performed to your satisfaction. You may also purchase a pre-paid time block, which can be paid by check or credit card. After updates are performed, the time is then deducted from your time block. In both cases, you would send the updates via email and they will be performed within 48 hours.

2) You maintain, with a Content Management System. If you would like to cut back on long-term costs by performing all site updates yourself, you will need a Content Management System (CMS). A web site with a CMS implemented allows clients with no HTML, FTP or computer knowledge to maintain and update a web site. Content Management Systems typically have WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get) Editors, which function much like Microsoft Word. You can format paragraphs, apply bold, italics, or underlines to text, insert web links, and automatically upload and resize images directly from the hard drive on your computer. The system that we implement is ridiculously easy to use for any novice.

3) You maintain, with no training. If you are an advanced web user that simply requires a website design but no HTML or FTP training, we can build the website design and hand everything else over to you. We can also separate the design from the content by using server side includes or PHP, so that you will not have to dig through dozens of lines of code to perform minor updates.

We strongly recommend that you plan and budget for regular website maintenance. Successful websites always have fresh content that compels the visitor to return. During our consultation, we can help you decide which maintenance plan most closely matches your needs.

How do I get my web site listed on the search engines?

By far the best and most cost effective method in the long term is to have your website optimized for search engines. Eyepinch offers search engine optimization services to fit your needs and budget.

What is web hosting?

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts, like Eyepinch, are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation.

What image formats are used in web development?

There are various digital formats in which images can be stored. JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP images can be viewed online. These files are generally "resampled" in either format, using a graphics program of some sort.

Will my site completely validate based on W3C standards?

Yes. To ensure the best quality and cleanest code possible, our developers hand code each page of each and every website we build. We avoid the temptation of WYSIWYG programs, outsourcing our code to overseas or having inexperienced developers produce our sites. It costs a bit more to build sites this way, but it's the only way to ensure all of the benefits of css and markup that validates, which are:

  • Cross browser and cross platform compatibility
  • Basic accessibility
  • Proper implementation and use of CSS
  • Proper use of HTML
  • Easier long term maintenance
What steps do you take to ensure 100% search engine index-ability?

We build dynamic sites in such a way that a search engine, more importantly a user, never sees a parameter in any URLs of any sites we build. We're also sure to avoid troubling issues like session IDs in URLs, requiring cookies for navigation, multiple URLs to the same pages, etc. We do this because we know that these are the kinds of things, when overlooked, that can trip up a search engine or give the appearance of duplicate content.

We accomplish this by building every site from the ground up, with search engine optimization in mind early in the process. We don't take an application (content management systems for instance) that someone else has built, and try to modify it. There are many reasons for this, but regarding search engine index-ability, this is the best way to ensure that all of the SEO best practices are built into our sites and we avoid all pitfalls.

How will my site perform on mobile devices?

We build sites based on current W3C standards. That means that every page will be accessible via mobile devices, screen readers, etc. They may not be optimized and designed specifically for those purposes, however they will be fully accessible to them.

In an ideal situation, we have the ability to design mobile versions of pages with an appropriate style sheet (design) and tailored content for the mobile user. Mobile users browse websites very differently than desktop users.

What do I need for an e-commerce web site?

You need a domain name, a website, a shopping cart system, web hosting, email, a merchant account to accept credit cards, a payment gateway (we recommend Authorize.NET), and a sales and marketing strategy. We can help with all that.

In most cases, you will input your own products and images (we'll show you how).
